About the PI

https://professornano.org/

This cleanroom is a single-PI self-managed effort by Dr. Andrew Sarangan. It was built and continues to operate largely from externally sponsored research.

Dr. Sarangan is a Professor in the Electro-Optics and Photonics Department at the University of Dayton, Ohio, USA. He received his BASc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada in 1991 and 1997 respectively.

His current research interests include semiconductor optoelectronics and nanofabrication. Starting from a small research laboratory at the University of Dayton, he slowly grew its capabilities into a comprehensive semiconductor nanofabrication laboratory. Capabilities of this lab include optical thin films, plasma processes, photolithography and laser interference lithography. In addition to maintaining a funded research program, he personally maintains everything in the laboratory, including equipment repairs and building new tools. He enjoys spending most of his time working with his hands and honing his skills. He remains very active in his lab despite being the department chair.

Dr. Sarangan teaches primarily to graduate students. He has developed graduate courses in Nanofabrication, Nanophotonics, Optical Thin Films and Integrated Optics. He is a senior member of IEEE and SPIE and a registered professional engineer in the State of Ohio. He is also an accomplished commercial pilot and certificated flight instructor.
